It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Holy Rosary College official website. I hope and trust that our website and prospectus will give you a glimpse of life at Holy Rosary College. Holy Rosary College, Uwani Enugu, is truly a great citadel of learning. It is an all-girls and boarding school founded in February, 1935. It is situated at No.54 Ziks Avenue, Uwani Enugu.
I have had the pleasure of teaching and leading in schools for over ten years now and so I feel so elated seeing children and young people challenged to grow and aspire to become the best they can be. Many parents who search for quality education and wholistic formation of their wards do not hesitate to come here as the management and staff are relentless in their effort to give their wards the best.
The availability of numerous functional facilities and serene environment also help to ensure that our environment is top notch for the education of your girl child. Moreover, our academic curriculum and co- curricular activities promote the three domains of complete learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor.
HRC is an open and inclusive community of learners, serving the need(s) of young people and their families. For cognitive learning, we want nothing but the best for our students and that is why we have academic excellence as one of our school mottos. In the aspect of affective domain, we teach our students to be sociable, friendly, loving, compassionate and caring, thoughtful of others, develop curiosity, imagination and confidence in themselves, as well as develop independence, personal and social responsibility. It is our goal that each student will grow from strength to strength, develop courage and resilience, and have a strong sense of self, so they can go on to shape their worlds into the future. As we believe in rich learning that extends beyond knowledge, the psychomotor domain is not left out. We offer a healthy environment with rich opportunities that train students who can relate what is taught in the classroom outside the classroom.

Welcome to Holy Rosary College

The present Holy Rosary College, Enugu was originally Teacher Training College. It was established in addition to St. Monica’s Ogbunike, founded in 1892, and the Training College at Calabar. The Holy Rosary Sisters came to Onitsha in 1928. In February 1935, they founded Holy Rosary College with an initial enrollment of 500 children in Immaculate Primary College. They had only four sisters on the staff. The Rev. Sisters recruited some standard six girls to assist them in teaching the young children.
The girls taught the children in the morning and attended afternoon classes organized by the Rev. Sisters to help them to prepare for the next day’s teaching. The idea of opening a Training College for girls was muted by Rev. Sr. M. Columba to the other sisters. Regardless of lack of funds and manpower, the Holy Rosary Sisters rose to the challenge of starting the college which finally was achieved. Rev. Sr. M. Felin Curley, the superior of the community approached His Grace, Archbishop Charles Heerey of Onitsha, with the new proposal. Because there was no building for this project, the Bishop granted permission for the renovation and conversion of an old structure, “Christian Warehouse” into a college. This was soon accomplished by Sr. M. Felin was assisted by Rev. Brother Baldomir.
The Holy Rosary College was opened on 2nd February 1935 by Archbishop Heery. Blessing the college, he remarked “I have been very pleased to assist at the opening of this Training College for girls. . . and we have every hope that God’s blessings will be on it and that it will do very great work for the girls of Onitsha and Nigeria.” Time and history have proved the words of the Archbishop as highly significant and prophetic. Every corner of Nigeria has experienced the impact of Holy Rosary College.
Holy Rosary College experienced a U-turn in 1997 when its leadership returned to the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Thus, another phase of life began in HRC when Chief (Mrs.) E.U. Onwuagha handed over the baton of leadership to Rev. Sr. (Dr.) Mercy Ani of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary in 1997. There followed years of increasing maturity under the inspirational leadership of Sr. Mercy Ani (Principal) who was later succeeded by Rev. Sr. Angela Anayo Igwe in 2015 and then Rev. Sr. Obiageli Ugwuja took over from Sr. Angela in 2021. Assisted by various teams of Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary and the priests working in the finance department as well as a team of highly qualified, tireless, dedicated staff, PTA, Old Girls and benefactors, HRC has grown to admirable height. A tree never makes a forest. All stakeholders help us to uphold the objectives of HRC, we hope and pray that the future will continue to be brighter.
